Experience and Knowledge
Bali Yoga Retreat

with Rachel Zinman and Emil Wendel
July 27- August 9, 2008
Ubud, Bali

We are delighted to present a Yoga retreat designed both for committed yoga students wanting to deepen their practice and for advanced practitioners, in the peaceful surroundings of the small hill town of Ubud, Bali.

This intensive retreat will offer daily Yoga philosophy seminars, Meditation, Pranayama, Mantra and Mudra, along with a practice of creatively sequenced Vinyasa-style Asanas to support this deep work. A visit to a sacred site for a very unique ritual will complete the program.

In tandem with daily Yoga practices we are dedicating this year’s retreat to the techniques of focusing attention (Dharana) taken from texts of late Tantra and early Hatha Yoga periods – techniques that lead to blissful stillness and ultimately, self-awareness. It is our wish to support you through the practice and understanding of these deeper techniques, to eventually develop a regular home practice with the potential of bringing lasting transformation to your daily life.

We rise at dawn for a strong 5-hour morning program including meditation, Asana and philosophy, with breakfast in between. A lighter afternoon of 2-3 hours’ work encompasses inversions and the yogic topic of the day, ending the practice with Pranayama. There is a free day in the middle, to enjoy the beauty of Bali.

Our retreat hotel, the Ananda Cottages in Ubud, has two yoga studios overlooking rice fields and surrounded by distant blue mountains – a truly serene environment.
The Ananda has two swimming pools on site; is close to good restaurants and shops, and is owned and run by a wonderful Balinese family. Ubud has retained its deep connection to the spiritual world continuing the beauty of its daily ceremonies – a totally inspiring environment for the study of Yoga.

– Welcome to an unforgettable time!

This retreat counts as 90 hours towards a 300-hour registered course with Yoga Alliance, approved for international accreditation, and YTAA accreditation in Australia.

Emil Wendel

Emil was born in Switzerland and has been living in Asia since the mid-seventies, studying first Chinese Classics and Taoism in Taiwan, and then Sanskrit and Indian Thought on the Subcontinent. He is deeply passionate about philosophy and especially its application in Yoga and practices and teaches Hatha-Yoga, using a method of merging physical postures, breathing techniques and meditation with discussions on liberating knowledge, to deepen a Yoga practice beyond the mere physical experience.

Emil's Pranayama (breathing techniques) and his instructions in Kriya-Yoga (Processes of Movement of Awareness) essentially follow the tradition and methodology of the Bihar School of Yoga, distilled through years of self-practice and experimentation. The study of a variety of Ashram traditions and treasured time with Sadhus and living Buddhist masters have brought a strong appreciation of the subjects of Mantras and Mudras, as well as other methods of Pratyahara (sense-withdrawal) and Dharana (concentration), the ancient yogic tools which may, over time, bring about that delightful state of true meditation (Dhyana).

Emil is presently instructing in teacher training programs for Yoga Arts of Australia, Brahmani Yoga and ShaktiSpirit of India, Radiantly Alive of Bali, and some European training schools, in the subjects of pranayama, meditation and yoga philosophy, the latter a series of lectures encompassing the known history, the different disciplines and traditions, and the personalities and masters of Yoga.

He also leads workshops and retreats in India and Europe, as well as in Bali, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and Japan.
