The Magic of Asana, Pranayama, Mantra and Mudra

A 2 day workshop with rachel zinman and emil wendel
Yokohama, Japan April 14 & 15, 2008

Asana and pranayama are powerful practices from the Hatha yoga tradition, which purify, strengthen and free us from our physical, mental and emotional limitations. The more subtle practices of Mantra-using the repetition of sound as a tool for inner transformation and Mudra- performing symbolic hand gestures to seal life force into the body can transport us to an even deeper state of stillness. In this two-day evening workshop with Rachel and Emil, we will explore the history and tradition of mantra and mudra, enjoy a flowing vinyasa practice, move into stillness through the power of pranayama and practice mantras and mudras to tap into our divine nature.

Rachel Zinman will lead the Vinyasa yoga and mantra practice.

Rachel has practiced yoga for 21 years and taught for 15. In Australia she trained in both the Iyengar and Astanga methods, teaching yoga at the Northern Rivers Conservatorium in Lismore, New South Wales, where she was Head of Dance. She also co-created and produced a popular Australian Yoga Video series and a Kid's Yoga Video.

Rachel is a professional dancer, choreographer, award-winning musician and published poet. Her teaching style reflects her deep engagement with the arts: dynamic and precise with an emphasis on mindfulness.

Rachel met ISHTA yoga founder Alan Finger in New York City in 2000 and taught at his studio, Be Yoga for four years. While there she was the co-creator, coordinator and one of the facilitators and mentors in the Be Yoga Teacher Training Program.

Rachel returned to Australia in September 2004, to teach in the Yoga Arts Teacher Training, and is currently facilitating workshops, retreats and trainings in The ISHTA System in Sydney, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay, Bali, Japan, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Paris, Munich, Frankfurt and New York. In addition Rachel facilitates Japanese cultural exchange yoga teacher training programs in her home town of Byron Bay, Australia and has taught in Japan many times. She is honoured to be visiting Japan and excited to share her passion for yoga

Emil Wendel will lead the talks on mudras and mantras, teach the pranayama and lead a mudra sequence.

Emil was born in Switzerland and has been living in Asia since the mid-seventies, studying first Chinese Classics and Taoism in Taiwan, and then Sanskrit and Indian Thought on the Subcontinent. He is deeply passionate about philosophy and especially its application in Yoga and practices and teaches Hatha-Yoga, using a method of merging physical postures, breathing techniques and meditation with discussions on liberating knowledge, to deepen a Yoga practice beyond the mere physical experience.

Emil's Pranayama (breathing techniques) and his instructions in Kriya-Yoga (Processes of Movement of Awareness) essentially follow the tradition and methodology of the Bihar School of Yoga, distilled through years of self-practice and experimentation. The study of a variety of Ashram traditions and treasured time with Sadhus and living Buddhist masters have brought a strong appreciation of the subjects of Mantras and Mudras, as well as other methods of Pratyahara (sense-withdrawal) and Dharana (concentration), the ancient yogic tools which may, over time, bring about that delightful state of true meditation (Dhyana).

Emil is presently instructing in teacher training programs for Yoga Arts of Australia, Brahmini Yoga and ShaktiSpirit of India, Radiantly Alive of Bali, and some European training schools, in the subjects of pranayama, meditation and yoga philosophy, the latter a series of lectures encompassing the known history, the different disciplines and traditions, and the personalities and masters of Yoga.

He also leads workshops and retreats in Europe, as well as in Bali, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and Japan.
